Day 9 - Palmyra

Day 9 - Palmyra

Today was a sunday so we got up really early and went to church...it was packed. You can imagine all of the people who saw pageant the night before swarming the little church in Palmyra. The ward did a musical presentation instead of speakers and they said that this is what they always do for the two sundays during pageant. It was okay but I think I would have liked to hear some talks too. When I say it was packed too...I mean it was packed. We got there right at nine and the chapel was full, the stand was full of the chior, the gym was full, the stage in the back was full, the Relief Society room was full, the Primary room was full the halls were full of parents with there little ones. It was packed. I bet they do the musical number because they were sick of the sacrament speakers "forgetting" to come that sunday to speak to all those people. That could make a poor deacon never come again if he had to stand up in front of all those people. Yikes.
I know you all think that this shot was set up, but it wasn't. I promise. Okay it was set up. We got to the Sacred Grove before the visitor centers were open so we just walked in it and had sometime to sit and read. We found this lovely wet log. It wasn't until after we left and went through the tours that they told us to stay on the path.

This is Wendy and I (of course) with the Palmyra temple in the background. In front of us is the sacred grove and to our right and left we have the smith houses. For all those who are wondering what is on my arm in all of these shots it is a brace for my video camera. Now seeing the pictures I realized that I should have taken it off so I didn't look so dorky, but you should see the Video that it enabled me to take.
This picture is not of Wendy and I at the Palmyra temple but rather is a picture of Brother and Sister Raymond at the temple (The guy with the suspenders in the background is Brother Raymond) . Anyway, Wendy and I just happened to accidentally walk into the frame right when the camera was taking the picture. Sorry Brother and Sister Raymond for getting in the pictures foreground.

This is a statue...for more information read Joseph Smith History 1:15-19.

Flowers at the Temple

So one of the highlights of the day is that my sister Joanna came and picked us up at the Hill Cumorah and took us back to her place. It was nice to finally see the family and spend some time with them. They have lived in New York for eight years and this was the first time that we visited. Anyways Joanna cooked us some AMAZING food (Joanna I know you are reading this but I am not saying it was amazing just because you are reading, It really was amazing and I am hoping for the recipe to appear in my in-box any day now) of marinated chicken and salt potatoes. She also did a load of wash for me which was very appreciated. It was nice after nine days on the road to finally get to sit down in a house and chat with family and just relax. Thanks again Joanna and Chris for letting us come and spend the evening with you.

You are hilarious! That just cracked me up! Funny how you can feel the spirit of the sacred grove through just a picture. I love that story. It gives me the chills everytime! Soooooo absolutely amazing that a 14 year old boy would be so independant like that and ask Heavenly Father which church to join! Really... what 14 year old boy would even care about that?! Obvioulsy we all feel the same way about Joseph Smith. Can't say enough!

I am so glad you liked my cooking. We LOVED having you there. The kids loved it. I forgot to post that picture of Em and Wendy! I loved that. After hearing and reading how full the Palmyra ward was I will never complain again when we get just one tour bus around pageant! Thanks for spending time with us. We LOVE you guys!!!
